What is the cornerstone of animal nutrition? Without a doubt, it's water. Even the most meticulously curated diet falls short if your livestock lacks access to fresh, readily available water.
Let's simplify it: Would you drink the water your livestock do? Enhancing their water supply isn't just common sense—it's a strategic investment in their well-being—improved hydration leads to higher weight gains, enhanced cattle health, and reduced susceptibility to diseases.
But the benefits don't stop there. By ensuring superior water quality, you also mitigate the wear and tear on your water sources, preventing dugouts from collapsing under constant traffic. Plus, with automated systems from SunStream Solar, you eliminate the need for manual pump starts or water hauling trips, streamlining your operations and maximizing efficiency. Explore our range of products below to discover how SunStream Solar can revolutionize your approach to livestock watering, providing both efficiency and health benefits for your herd.
Ensuring access to clean water is essential for the well-being and productivity of livestock. Numerous studies have shown the profound impact of clean water on animal health, growth, and overall performance. From reducing the risk of diseases to enhancing nutrient absorption, providing pristine water sources yields tangible benefits for ranchers and their herds alike.
Explore below to learn more about the compelling advantages of clean water for livestock and discover how prioritizing water quality can improve your ranching operations.
Cattle Prefer Clean Water
Research shows that cattle prefer water pumped out of a creek and into a trough. 80% of the time, the cattle would walk to the trough for water versus going into the creek. They often walked farther to drink from the trough, which offered the same water.
Your Animals Will Be Healthier
If your livestock have access to the dugout, they are churning up mud and defecating in the water. How unhealthy does that seem? Diseases such as foot rot are significantly reduced by keeping your livestock high and dry. Cows will be healthier, resulting in higher conception rates and more nutritious milk.
They Will Gain Weight Faster
Other research has shown that calves with access to clean water versus those that walk in the water they drink gain 0.5+ lbs/day faster. That equates to 75+ lbs extra per 150-day grazing period. You do the math! It’s cash straight into your pocket.
You Will Save Money
Cleaning out dugouts every few years because the livestock push in the sides costs a lot. And with the price of fuel steadily rising, hauling water or running gas pumps isn’t very attractive.
You Will Have More Time
Our systems do not eliminate the need to check your water, but they will save you time by reducing the amount of disease you have, the amount of time spent hauling water or fueling pumps, and rebuilding water supplies.
